Skilled Group is one of the few national listed companies headquartered in Box Hill.  Greg will tell us all about Skilled’s operation (apart from sponsoring Geelong FC’s stadium!).  October is Rotary International’s Vocational Month so given Skilled’s business of providing personnel skilled in a broad range of vocations, Greg’s visit will be topical and appropriate.

26th October

Chairman – Greg Cooper

Guest Speaker – Robert Colla, Principal, English Language School Blackburn.

The school fills a fascinating need for immigrant school children. The kids come from as far away as Healesville. They probably represent the most underprivileged section of our community. Greg Cooper is working on a matching grant for their literacy work and appreciates having the opportunity to let club members understand the work of the English Language School Blackburn

President’s Report

What a splendid meeting we had last week! Congratulations Ken for establishing the Finals Week Footy Breakfast and promoting it so well. Our thanks go to Trevor (good to see you Trev) for his work in ‘finding’ our guest speakers (Alan McAllister and Mick McGuane); to Murray for his wonderful auction session; and, to Ralston for his excellent chairmanship. It made quite a change to have a cooked breakfast, and the impact of an earlier start was made up for by the beautiful morning. The sight of our DG Philip Hedley dressed in red and white left no doubt as to where his sympathies lie, and we appreciated his enthusiasm in joining us. I don’t know whether it is an omen but Rotary’s colours are blue and gold! By the time this is published all will be revealed!

The meeting was used to raise funds for Operation Cleft, and was an undoubted success both in raising money and awareness of the project with our visitors. One of our speakers, Mick McGuane very generously put ‘a smile on a child’s face’. Colin’s wonderful idea has now very clearly passed it’s trial stage and as a Club we will now have to think very clearly about where we take the project from here. Over the next few weeks it will be necessary to develop a business plan which will establish the size and duration of ‘the main game’.

We now head into a busy season – House for Homeless Youth (4/10 and 11/10), Bunnings Sausage Sizzle (7/10), RYPEN Reunion (9/10), Taralye Sensory Trail (15/10). This should take up the slack now the footy season is over!

Have a good week in Rotary.

Michael

Last Week’s Meeting Notes

Roving Reporter Tony Stokes

Guest Speakers:   Alan McAllister and Mick McGuane.

A near record crowd was in attendance for the Special Grand Final Week Breakfast, and it was a colourful spectacle with many decked out in their AFL Team colours – none more resplendent than DG Philip in his red and white Swans outfit. Chairman Ralston introduced special guests Alan McAllister and Mick McGuane from the Collingwood Football Club and announced the great news that Mick had this very morning “purchased a smile” by sponsoring an Operation Cleft child. Our sincere thanks, Mick.

Alan, who spoke first, had a successful career in business before taking on an administrative role at Collingwood, where he stayed for 13 years, 10 as President. Alan briefly shared some of his memories of the 1990 Premiership win over Essendon.

Mick started his football at Sebastopol near Ballarat. In his 10 year career with the Magpies, he played 155 games, kicked 128 goals, was Club Best & Fairest twice, represented Victoria in State of Origin 3 times and was All-Australian in 1992. He was never once reported, and while he always polled well in the Brownlow, he never won it. He entertained us with lively anecdotes from his life both on and off the field, his insights into the pressures of Grand Final football, and challenged us with a particularly strong story from his time as a coach at Burnie when he gave an opportunity to a player that others have written off and he led his team to several successive premierships. Mick also offered some insightful comments on the effect on young players from competitions such as the TAC Cup, when their aspirations for AFL success are not fulfilled.

In all, a great morning, and special thanks to PP Trevor for making it possible.

Once again, Murray Baird showed why he could always fall back to being an auctioneer if the legal business ever dried up (unlikely!!). Through some skilful working of the crowd and some very spirited bidding, a number of items of football memorabilia were auctioned, raising over $500 for Operation Cleft. Highlights were DG Philip successfully bidding for a picture of the 2005 Swans Team with a little help from Libby, and John Bell paying $100 for a 1955 Essendon members ticket, and promptly placing it back on sale, where it was knocked down for a further $95. Thank you John for that generous gesture.

Announcements:

Taralye Orienteering and Open Day

Our club has been asked to assist in the running of the Taralye Orienteering and Open day from 2.00 - 5.00pm, on Saturday 15 October. Taralye, a school for the hearing impaired is at located in Blackburn Road, Blackburn near the intersection of Canterbury Road.

Teams from schools and business will be navigating and orienteering a nature trail course (walking not running!) through the Black's Walk creeklands area from Blackburn Road to Middleborough Road and return. Prizes will be awarded and the orienteering will be followed by a sausage sizzle and children’s entertainment and an opportunity for visitors to look around the centre.

We will be helping by providing marshals around the course and cooking the sausages.

We have had about 12 club members who said they will help on the day but we need about 20 people if possible.

Dorothy Jackson is the club contact for this event. Dorothy is moving house this week and won’t be at Wednesday’s meeting so if you can help let Dorothy know by next Wednesday week, October 5.

From District 9810 Website:

Interact

Interact is an international organisation of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace.

Combining the words "international" and "action" created the name.

Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs.

Rotary clubs provide guidance and inspiration, but the Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting. Clubs take a variety of forms; both single-gender and mixed as well as large and small. The membership base of a club can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools from the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least one community service project and at least one project that furthers international understanding and goodwill. Interactors develop a worldwide network of friendships through exchanges with local and overseas clubs. Along the way, Interactors develop their leadership skills and initiative while meeting new friends.
Through their service activities, Interactors learn the importance of:
* Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
* Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
* Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
* Advancing international understanding and goodwill

The Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA, initiated the first Interact club in 1962. Today there are more than 6,650 Interact clubs in some 103 countries and geographical areas.
