Annual Art Show

The Rotary Club of Mordialloc Annual Art Show is conducted around August each year as a fundraising event and to support local artists.   First run in 1976 as a “hobbies, art and crafts” display, the format has developed over the years. The art displayed covers traditional painting styles using oils, pastels and watercolours.

Report on 2006 Art show by Brian Sawford:

“2006 Art Show Report

This year’s Art Show was the most successful in recent times. Of the 286 paintings on display, we sold 55 with another 7 going as acquisitive prizes to our sponsors. Our sale rate is thus nearly 20%, a high rate amongst shows like ours.

Lorraine Burns again won the ‘Best Painting’ Prize with one of her “children on the beach” works. These have been highly successful for Lorraine and she almost always sells all that she exhibits. Our other prize winners were: Dennis Murnane, Jenny Langstone, Robert Madden , Annee Kelly, Maureen Lynch and Robert van Bileveld.

The table below summarises some statistics from recent shows. You will see that we were up in all aspects except the commission we take on prize sponsorships. This is because we did not obtain a sponsor for our major prize and so had to fund the Best Painting Prize through our sales. We have put a lot of effort into getting sponsors, and to making our sponsorship package more professional and more attractive, over the last two years. It is important that we maintain this effort in the coming years. Please be on the look out for potential sponsors and refer them to a member of the Art Show Committee.

I would like to thank all the members and partners who participated in the running of the Art Show this year, especially members of the Committee.

Brian Sawford

Meals on Wheels

Since 1984 the Rotary Club of Mordialloc has operated the City of Kingston Meals on Wheels service at weekends in the Mordialloc, Parkdale and Mentone areas. Over this period, up to 20 elderly and housebound people have been served a nourishing meal at weekends. Over recent months, the number of elderly persons requiring this service has reduced and the City of Kingston has decided to discontinue weekend deliveries from the end of June 2006. The last delivery of Meals on Wheels by a club member was made by Past President Cliff riley on the weekend of 24-25 June.

Alternative meal arrangements are being made by the Council for weekend meal recipients from July onwards.

Jumble Sale

Another long-standing and popular activity is the club’s Annual Jumble Sale held usually on the morning of a Saturday in February in the car park of the Mentone Bowl, corner Nepean Highway and Warrigal Road, Mentone.

A large range of used household goods is available for sale to the public at competitive prices.  The type of goods sold includes used furniture, some appliances, tools, clothing, toys, sporting equipment, books, plants and general bric-a-brac. Donations of suitable goods from the public are welcome and are accepted in the months prior to the sale day.  .

The 2006 Jumble Sale was held on Saturday 25 February 2006.  The sale day was again a great success despite threatening weather.

There is no jumble sale scheduled by the club for 2007.

Youth Activities

Rotary offers a range of programs to meets the various needs of young people in the community.  The main ones that the Rotary Club of Mordialloc has been involved in recent years include:

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA).  A program for Year 11 students with particular interest in international affairs allowing them to debate current issues of concern in the world.  Teams of two students each represent a different country and argue from that country’s viewpoint on a range of issues over two days in the Chamber of the Victorian Legislative Council.

The 2006 MUNA was held on the weekend of 6 and 7 May in the Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament.  The club sponsored two students from Mentone Girls Secondary College to this year's MUNA.  This has been a very well received program and the Rotary Club of Mordialloc has sponsored some very capable students who have had the opportunity to engage in high quality discussion and debate on world events.  Further details are available form Jill Payne and on the New Generations page of the District 9810 website  www.9810.rotary.org.au/

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN). A program of personal development and encouragement for Year 10 students.  The 2006 RYPEN program was held from Friday 31 March to Sunday 2 April 2006.  The club sponsored two candidates from St Bede's College

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).  A leadership and personal development program for young adults (18 to 25 years old) who are already in group leadership positions or have the potential to undertake leadership.  The RYLA program has been held in December for the past three years.  However, for 2006-07 RYLA has been rescheduled until the end of June 2007.  More details of exact dates and venue will be available shortly.

International Youth Exchange.  A reciprocal student exchange program that allows 15 to 18 year-old school students to live and study for one year in an overseas country.  Applications are open in February-April for students departing Australia in the following January

Science Summer Schools.  Residential programs for senior students with interest and ability in the sciences to explore future sturdy and vocational options.  These programs are supported by industry and higher educational institutes and students have the opportunity to interact with technical specialists and academics in various fields.  The two major programs available are:

·         The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), conducted for Year 11 students in Canberra over two weeks in January

·         Siemens Science Schools, conducted for year 10 students over several days at a Melbourne tertiary institute.

We are pleased that the club's nomination, Helen Stebbing of Parkdale Secondary College, attended the NYSF program in the first two weeks of January 2007.  Entries for the 2007 NYSF program closed recently and interviews of candidates have been held recently.

Camp Awakenings.  A program to develop personal skills and self-confidence conducted in May by the Rotary Club of Aspendale for Year 9 students.  The 2007 program was held over the weekend 11 to 14 May and the club sponsored two participants

Peer Support.  A range of programs are available to support secondary students of varying year levels in appropriate interact with their peers.

Other programs are also available.

Full details of these programs are made available to local schools at the time when applications are being accepted.  Further information is available from Bob Travers
