Rotary Projects

We are involved both in Rotary Projects and fundraising to promote our Projects. Both are important as without funds the Projects we can support are limited. Some of our recent activities are set out below:

Youth Exchange
Our last outgoing Rotary Exchange student was Cameron Carter from Wedderburn. He went to Austria for 12 months, returning early 2007. Cameron was hosted by the Rotary Club of Wien (Danube) and has enjoyed his time overseas.

Our most recent inbound Rotary Exchange student was Marina Lotufo Esvael Rodrigues from Sao Paulo in Brazil. Together with our mother club the Rotary Club of Campbelltown she was jointly hosted. Her year was a great success and she touched the lives of many people, not just Rotarians while she was here. She returned home after a year with us in February, 2008. She was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sao Paulo Brooklin and attended Campbelltown Performing Arts High School while with us.

24 Hour Cancer Walk
In October 2007 the Club again participated in the 24 Hour Walk against Cancer together with many other community groups and Macarthur locals whose lives have been touched by this disease. The event was held at the athletics field in Leumeah and a number of our members were walkers, encouraged by their sponsors and friends. Support for those afflicted and for those affected by this disease is a special cause for our Club. We try to help through donations to many Macarthur community groups involved at the coal face.

Rotary Sensory Garden
A major project for the Club was the building of the "Sunrise Rotary Sensory Garden" located within the Oncology Department of Campbelltown Hospital.

It was designed by Mark McKenzie of Tim's Garden Centre in Mount Annan. The garden will provide a tranquil setting for patients and carers within the Oncology Department.

The garden adjoins the Cancer Therapy Day Care Centre and patients receiving day treatment can sit in the garden and receive their treatment away from the hospital atmosphere.

The attractions of this garden are water features, a wide variety of sensory plants and the centrepiece is a Rotary sundial.

Police Officer of the Year Awards
With the Rotary Clubs of Ingleburn, Campbelltown, Narellan and Camden we hosted the Rotary Macarthur Police Officer of the Year Awards. This year was the second time the event was hosted by Rotary. It was held on 12 March and was an outstanding success. The five local Rotary clubs banded together to present awards to serving police officers who have given outstanding service to the public in the Local Area Commands of Camden, Campbelltown and Macquarie Fields. We were supported by a number of generous sponsors. The Rotary Awards night is an opportunity for police officers to be recognised for kindness, compassion, courtesy, courage, dedication and professionalism in their work. Police work is often thankless work but Rotary believes Police Officers should be supported and thanked for the difficult job they do.

The event was attended by Police Commisioner, Andrew Skipioni, the previous Police Commissioner, Ken Moroney, Rotary District 9750 District Governor Patrick Robers, four Local State Members of Parliament, Representatives of all three Local Councils, the Police Chaplain, Fr Barry Dwyer, last year's winner Detective Sergeant Kevin Barr of the Criminal Investigation Team Campbelltown, a large contingent of Police Officers and many Rotarians. The winners were adjudged by a Committee of Rotarians after wide consultation. The task was difficult because of the number and high quality of all nominees.

The winner of the Rotary Macarthur Police Officer of the Year Award for 2008 was Leading Senior Constable Leanne Drewe, a General Duties officer in the Campbelltown Local Area Command. Congratulations to Leanne, the other Award winners and to all nominees.

Pride of Workmanship Awards
On 3 May, 2007 the Club hosted its 10th annual Pride of Workmanship Awards night. This event allows employers to nominate those of their employees who go the extra mile in their work. It has proved to be very popular in the Macarthur with about 200 people attending on the night. Rotarian Wendy Underwood was the prime mover for this event, ably supported by other Club members. We were again privileged to have our District Governor, Ray Patteson and wife Merilee present for the occasion. Congratulations to all the nominees. The task of selecting the winners was very difficult because of the high standard of the nominees. The winners in the various categories were:
