Our Club is one of nine Rotary Clubs in the Sutherland Shire, located on Sydney's southern outskirts, historically significant as the birthplace of modern Australia from the landing of Captain Cook at Kurnell in 1770.

Brief History of the Club

See this page for a list of our Past Presidents.

The Rotary club of Sutherland was Charted on the 12th December 1958. It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cronulla. The Foundation President was John Serisier, a local solicitor and the District Governor was Hugh Lloyd-Owen.

The Club commenced with a membership of 23 which grew to 30 in 1960. Of the original members two remain as active members, John Adlard (Foundation Secretary) and Bert Rogers.

From the start, the Club was involved in local community projects with its first project being repairs and extensions to the Handicapped Childrens Centre at Sylvanvale, carried out in the Rotary year 1959-60.

The Club achievements since then have been
wide and varied with the majority aimed to
assist both local and international organisations and charities, including Rotary International's long term project "PolioPlus".

In conjunction with other Rotary Clubs in the Shire of Sutherland a Chapel was constructed within the Sutherland Hospital grounds in 1976-77. An achievement that stands today as a memorial to Rotary International, and recognised by a plaque at the Hospital's entrance to commemorate Rotary's Centennial in 2005. In the Australian Bi-Centennial year of 1988, the Shire's clubs again cooperated on a project to clean up and plant trees along Captain Cook Drive, the access road to Captain Cook's landing place at Kurnell.

In 1977 RC Sutherland chartered the Rotary Club of Sutherland Civic. In 2004 members of that club continuing in Rotary moved to RC Sutherland, making one Rotary Club in Sutherland.

The 'Paul Harris Fellow' recognition has been awarded to over 58 members of our Club or our community.

It is a matter of pride that our Club has provided - Five District Governors to District 9750.
