RECREATIONAL / CULTURAL

NEW – “LINGA LONGA” CULTURAL WEEK-END FOR ROTARIANS

Due to a number of requests by Rotarians since the completion of the facilities at “Linga Longa”, Rollands Plains (near Port Macquarie), Jack Beetson has agreed that Rotarian groups and their guests are welcome to visit for a “country getaway week-end”. The timing to be arranged so that it does not coincide with the “Kids at Risk” rehabilitation courses.

This is a wonderful chance for Rotarians and guests to have a weekend away from Sydney in the beautiful Rollands Plains valley and to discover the real story of the aboriginal culture and traditions first hand from Jack Beetson.

VOCATIONAL

FIRST AID PROGRAM FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

Health problems are a major concern in the indigenous communities.

By sponsoring a First Aid Course or a student much will be achieved at a grass roots level in the area of indigenous health.  Indigenous people, trained in First Aid go back to their own communities and are on hand at the "coal face" to deliver, and in some cases, administer life saving assistance by which many lives might well be saved by having this knowledge.

INDIGENOUS HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS

This is a co-operative program between the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund in this District and the relevant government department in NSW & the Commonwealth Government. The object of the program is to provide a scholarship, which can be used to assist Indigenous students to undertake a course in a wide range of health related professions. The purpose is to assist students to gain an education which will in turn enable them to use this education for the benefit of other Indigenous people - hopefully, but not necessarily, in some of our remote areas.

This program commenced with the intention of training doctors to work amongst other Indigenous people, but the scope of the scheme was enlarged to permit the training, firstly of nurses, and eventually any health related profession. The value of each scholarship is $5,000 per year. State Governments have undertaken to subsidise funds raised for this program on a dollar for dollar basis - up to varying limits in each State. The Commonwealth Government provides funding for the administration of the program at the ARHRF office.

MENTORS - A program will be unveiled in the near future wherein indigenous youth will need mentors in a number of vocations and other areas of expertise. This will follow a new program being inaugurated in our District to encourage indigenous kids to complete their education.
