EARLY FUNDRAISER
“Nearly Anything Goes”. In 1980, newly elected Gosford City Mayor, Don Leggett invited Gosford North Rotary Club to organize and run NAG as a community project as part of the new Gosford City celebrations. It was highly successful for 13 years and traveled to far flung places throughout the state. Events were either run by the club or the equipment lent to other clubs to run. NAG was the club’s major fundraiser and raised an average of about $10,000 per year for the club’s Charity Account.

There have been other successful regular fundraising events since NAG, such as the sale and erection of flag poles, but the next most successful and current fundraiser is the Erina Fair Chocolate Wheel which has been running for several years now and raises around $12,000 annually.

YOUTH EXCHANGE
The club has been very active over its lifetime in hosting and sending out students on overseas exchange. Students from Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, USA and Finland have been hosted by the club members over the years with many successful continuing relationships produced. These friendships generally culminate in overseas visits by members to see past “sons & daughters” and also revisits from the students themselves.

YOUTH EXCHANGE
There have been many varied and worthwhile overseas projects undertaken by the club but the most current is the Nepal Dental Project, initiated and managed by club member and local dentist, Malcolm Deal. The project was started in 1993 and has achieved:

  • The establishment of two dental clinics in rural Nepal and the treatment of 20,000 villagers by visiting dental teams.
  • The training of four Nepalese dental workers who treat 6,000 villagers annually.
  • There have been 23 volunteer team visits involving over 30 different dentists.
  • The establishment of an orthodontic clinic in the National Dental Hospital of Nepal in Kathmandu.
  • Malcolm Deal is currently teaching fifteen Nepali dentists a general orthodontic course over a two year period. This requires his continuing regular visits to Nepal. However, the current political situation makes it very dangerous for team visits and they have been suspended until order is restored.

Malcolm has recently received an Order of Australia for his continuing humanitarian work on this project and the club members are extremely proud of his untiring effort and achievements.

MEMBERSHIP
The Rotary Club of Gosford North currently has thirty two active members and five honorary members and a recent survey indicated that the reason for the clubs’ excellent attendance record and involvement in projects and activities is the fellowship experienced by both guests and fellows.
The club is assured of a long and enjoyable lifetime.
