Activities and Achievements
July 1997 Six students from Epping Boys' High school and the International School were involved in the Youth Enhancement Scheme (YES). Chris O'Brien, Athol McCoY, Mal Bracken organised this programme.
Exchange student Lita Andriani returned home to Indonesia.
The Club's participation in the Eastwood Market was reduced to 1 in every 4 weeks.
August 1997 A Capitol Theatre Fellowship Night,"Sweet Charity" Arranged by Graham Simons.
A letter of thanks was received from the RC of Charleville in appreciation of goods supplied for "The Rid the Itch"campaign following the floods in Queensland. Generously supported and organised by John Hayes.
John Corney presented a Rotary Carpet to the club. It was previously held by his father PDG of District 9283 Tasmania.
September 1997. The Annual Debate between Epping BHS and Cheltenham GHS on the topic "Freedom of Speech is an absolute right ". The girls won. Results over a period of 16 years. Girls 12. Boys 4.
A Mal Mitchell Memorial Dinner was held in conjunction with the 35th Battalion. Mal's battalion during the last war. The Prime Minister made an appearance.
The club supported a Low Cost Shelter project for Indian Families & Russian Children.
Financial assistance amounting to $450 was given to the "Shack" to cover the cost of transport to Port Macquarie.
2 young people were sponsored, 1 to RYLA at Vision Valley and the other to RYPEN.
Peter Reddy was inducted - Classification Employment Service .
Rotaract/Rotary Bowling competition. Rotaract won.
4 underprivileged children were sponsored to the "Operation Hope" camp at Vision Valley.
October 1997.Our Austerity Club Dinner was hosted by Bob and Michele Smeallie, Sudath Karunarante and family prepared and donated the evenining meal. The proceeds of $640 supported the Children of Russia and Homeless Indian Families programs.
November 1997. The Annual Langston Award was awarded to Andrew McLeod from Epping West Primary School. Roy Sadler coordinated the award.
A Trivia Night was held at Epping Boys'High School raising $1700. Organised by Paul Clune in conjunction with Ken Owler.
The club assisted with the Dalmar Fete and raised $203.
A members’ weekend was held at Stan Ledger's holiday House at Budgewoi. Organised by Graham Simons and Russ Walker.
A Mystery Rivercat Harbour Cruise was held for 58 Retirement village and residents in Care with the aid of Cheltenham Girls' High and Epping Boys' High students and Prefects. A letter was received from one Dorothy Wilmont "Many thanks for the job" you did for me at the boat on Saturday.Forgive my writing - I am almost blind - 99 on January 1st 1998. The outing was organised by Richard Farmer.
The club sponsored Citizenship Awards to 8 local schools.
December 1997. District Governor Brian Coleman visited.
The Annual General Meeting of the club was held.
The club participated in the Carols in the Park Program and raised $1840 . Organised by Christine Mikhael, Russ Walker and Stan Ledger.
The Family Christmas Night was celebrated.
The members’ Christmas Night was held at Dence Park.
Assisted with Bush Fire Appeal. Collected $1480.
Neil Anderson was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
January 1998. Exchange Student Andrew Stevens returned from Denmark.
36 members and friends attended Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband". Graham Simons.
The anniversary of the club's participation (30 years) in RYLA was celebrated, sponsoring Natasha Sansoni and Rebecca Kemton.
February 1998.French GSE Team arrived.
A Business Night was held for local business men and women. Robert Leece was the guest speaker. The evening was organised by Graham Simons.
Mrs. Masako Harada visited the club. Mrs Harada was the first Japanese Exchange student to Australia.
Sadly PDG Buster Pye passed away. Buster was adjudicator of our singing competition with Carlingford Club for 14 years.
In conjuction with the Rotary club of St.Leonards Fiona Given was presented with a voice synthesiser and computer.
The club erected a 4th Tree Shadehouse located at Epping Public School.Organised by Ross Hinton and John Briscoe.
Peter Reddy inducted into the club with the Classification of Training/Employment.
The club sponsored Anne Beilby to the Prime Music Camp.
March1998.The Annual Ikebukuro Night was held at the Jnu No Omise Restaurant . Arranged by John Hayes.
Our Inaugural Charity Golf Day was held at Pennant Hills Golf Club raising $11126 the Major Beneficiary was the Epilepsy Association of NSW.The Day was organised by a committee chaired by Paul Clune.
The District Conference was held at Canberra, 25 members and partners attended.
The theme was "Grease" and the attendance was organised by Michael Denham and Ken Beacom.
Carly Plummer and Patrick Bingham were sponsored to attend the RYPEN Program held at Camp Breakaway. This sponsorship was organised by Mal Bracken.
Marie Allen was inducted with the Classification of Financial Planning.
Alan Cavenagh was inducted with the Classification of Railway Maintenance.
The club sold food and refreshments from the caravan at the Berlei Sale raising $240.
The French GSE Team Departed for home.
April 1998. The Annual District Assembly was held at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.
The Club participated in the church sponsored fun day at Boronia Park.
Ava Emdin established international contact and friendship with 30 clubs overseas.
A steamboat Dinner was hosted by Di and Russ Walker in aid of a CAFIU donation to be made during the forthcoming visit to China. $450 was raised.
May 1998. The club presented $6000 to the Epilepsy Association of NSW .
The Association was the major beneficiary of the Charity Golf day held earlier in the year.
The District GSE Team left for France.
Twenty club members and partners departed for China, organised by the Chinese Association for International Understanding.
The club participated in the Red shield appeal of the Salvation Army and collected $5500. The collection was organised by John Corney and John Edwards.
Pride of Workmanship and Community Awards were presented to local citizens. The presentation was organised by Bob Nash, Alan Thomas,John Briscoe and Alan Cavenagh.
The club distributed 400 copies of "So you want to be a driver"to Epping Boys' high School and Cheltenham Girls'High School.
June 1998. A Fellowship Theatre Night was organised by Graham Simons and 31 attended. The performance of "Showboat". The District GSE Team returned from France.
A Suicide Awareness Forum was held at Epping Boys' High School.The Forum was organised by Bob Dunlop and Mal Bracken.75 attended.
A tour of the Olympic Site by members and partners was organised by Graham Simons.
The club changeover was held. Athol McCoy was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
The club was presented with a Rotary International Presidential Citation for outstanding club participation in the four Avenues of Service to "Show that Rotary Cares".
