Activities and Achievements
July 1996. Four students from Epping Boys' High School participated in the Youth Enhancement Scheme (YES) coordinated and arranged by Wal Dover, Mal Bracken, George Cepak and Peter Tugwell.
August 1996. Exchange Student Lita Andriani arrived from Indonesia. Host parents were Monica and Geoff Saville, John and Vivienne Corney, Graham and Carol Stevens.
GSE Team returned from Italy.
Catered for the Open Day at the New Childrens Hospital at Westmead, resulting in a profit of $165.
Donated food to Dalmar and the Matthew Talbot Hostel.
Max Breckenridge conducted a walk from Pretty Beach to Lobster Beach.
Ross Hinton and Thomas Wong were inducted.
September 1996. The Annual debate between Cheltenham Girls’ High and Epping Boys’High was won by the girls.
A Putt Putt Golf Day was enjoyed with the Rotaractors,
A banner was received from the Rotary Health Research Fund for raising $13000.
Sudath Karunaratne donated an autoclave machine to the Nepal Dental Project.
October 1996.Members contributed to the Cord Blood Bank Project raising $520 to which the club added $520. This project was coordinated by Paul Clune.
The club supported a Charity Auction in aid of Prostate Cancer and Organ Donation.
The support was arranged by Christine Mikhael.
November 1996 the members' weekend was held at John Hayes's farm in the Hunter Valley.
The club assisted with Dalmar Fete and raised $580.
Richard Farmer organised the Meadowbank Mystery Ferry Tour for 60 elderly folk from various rest homes.
Bob Smeallie arranged a Symphony under the Stars Fellowship outing at Narellan.
The Langston Scholarship was awarded to Jack Skinner of Epping NorthPrimary School.
Tony and Sandy Castley joined an FAIM Team to Nepal.
Graham Stevens and Nev. Steer organised a Young Drivers Awareness Bicycle Safety Day. Neighbourhood Watch and Eastwood police were involved.
December 1996.The club participated in carols at Boronia Park.The celebration was coordinated by Christine Mikhael and Wal Cooper.
A garage sale at the markets organised by Stan Ledger and Ross Hinton raised $340.
The members' Christmas party was held at the Dence Park Aquatic Center.
Paul Harris Fellow Mal Mitchell regretfully passed away.
A Market Report covering 5 years' operations showed total income therefrom at $202604. Disbursed as follows:
Paid to Epping Rotary club $111,347,to Eastwood Rotary Club $37115, to Eastwood
Public School $23,233. Advertising $30,909. Each Rotarian Shift earned $109.
The club assisted with the Eastwood Christian Community Aid Christmas Appeal.
January 1997.A Nepal Dental Van Project with an overall cost of $50000 was organised by Tony Castley, Sudath Karunaratne and John Corney. This sum included $5000 donated by club members and a local dentist together with a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation and an Ausaid Grant.
Andrew Stevens departed for Denmark to spend a year as an Exchange Student.
PP John Goddard was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.
February 1997. The District Conference was held at Wollongong University. 30 attended from our club.Our club won "Worst Dressed Club at the Conference Dinner.
Geoffrey Booth was inducted.
Our RYLA Nominees Suzanne Payne and Gillian Walker attended the RYLA Camp.
The club sponsored students to the Siemens Science School, CRA Science Forum and BHP Engineering School.
Janet Edwards and Carolyn Brereton departed for Nepal to teach with the FAIM Nepal Project for two months.
Graham Simons Organised a Dinner for businessmen. Dr.Ian Lin was the Guest Speaker.
The Annual Austerity Dinner was arranged by John Corney and held at the Matthew Talbot Hostel.
March 1997. The club hosted the District Farewell Dinner to the Australian and Argentine GSE Teams at the Hornsby RSL. John Corney was in charge.
Trivia Night was conducted at Epping Boys High School and raised $2525.
Paul Clune organised the function.
Past Youth awardees returned to the club for Commemoratory Dinner.
The club participated in the Red Cross Door Knock Appeal.
Following the Queensland flood John Hayes arranged for insectitide valued at $3000 to be forwarded to Charleville Rotary Club for distribution.
Ken Owler arranged the erection of LAMP (Lost and Missing Persons) notice board at Epping Station.
April 1997. The District Assembly was held at Bathurst. The club sold polo shirts there and raised $1000 for the Nepal Bus Project.
Club members assisted with the Boronia Park Family Fun Day and raised $790. Bob Smeallie organised the club's involvement.
Members participated in a Family Great Northern Walk to Lane Cove River Park.
John Briscoe was inducted.
Stan Ledger and Ray Hosking joined the 25 year club.
The club participated in an inaugural Anzac Remembrance Wreath Laying Ceremony at the new Memorial in Boronia Park.
The club supported Edward Lo,an entrant in the Vocational Operation Livewire oject. Keith Williams and George Cepak were the coordinators.
May 1997. Members of the club participated in the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and raised $7000. John Edwards and Graham Stevens coordinated the collection.
Graham Simons and Peter Tugwell organised the Pride of Workmanship presentations, which were made to Kataryn O'Connor, Nick Karac, and Allan Wood.
The Ikebukuru Night was celebrated at the Woo Roe Restaurant Eastwood.
Community Service Awards were presented to 4 participants. Tom McCann arranged the presentation.
The club made a major contribution to the opening of the M2 Tollway which included a tunnel walk. $40000 was raised. Proceeds benefited the Rotary Health Fund and the Prostate Cancer Research fund. Workers sold 3000 sausages, 1000 steaks, 5500 cans of drinks resulting in a profit of $7500.Souvenir First Day Covers were printed and
sold resulting in a profit of $1500. Our committee members were Bruce Edwards,Graham Stevens, Colin Gray, Geoff Booth and John Goddard.
A " Bush Tucker" Fellowship Evening was arranged by George Cepak with an "Ollie the Platypus" theme.
Club members participated in a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Program conducted by the St.Johns Ambulance.The program was arranged by Ken Beacom.
June 1997. The International Conference was held at Glasgow and club members Tony Castley, Ian Mackay, Graham Simons and Alan Thomas together with wives attended.
Club changeover cost $25.
PP Tony Castley was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship and PP Russ Walker was presented with a Sapphire Pin, adding to his Paul Harris Fellowship.
The club won the District Noel Macdonald Shield for the best Bulletin in the district. Bruce Edwards and Tony Castley were responsible.
The club received a Presidential Citation from RI President Luis Giay, for completing Service Programs involving all 4 Avenues of Service.
A Program for refurbishing the caravan was announced by Ross Hinton.
