Two Year 9 students from Barraba Central School, Kate Cabot & Ryan Faulkner, related their experiences and impressions on attending the Siemens Science Experience at the University of New South Wales from 2nd to 4th of October. Both gave excellent addresses at the Club meeting which conveyed some of the excitement and wonder of the Experience, at the same time also giving an appreciation of how important an event like the Experience could be in leading young people into their future. A highlight that both mentioned in detail was the experiment which involved detonating a wheelie bin.

The Chief Executive Officer of the New England Health Service, Stuart Schneider, addressed a joint meeting of the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Barraba. Mr Schneider spoke at length about the plans for the redevelopment of Barraba Hospital, including the way that the plans not only incorporated a whole of care concept, but also allowed for future development. The use of video conferencing technology was also discussed, particularly that it not only allowed for specialists to be brought into consultations, but also allowed for training of health professionals to both attract them to Barraba and avoid their de-skilling once they had come. Mr Schneider mentioned that, where this sort of scheme had been used in Victoria, it had led to 3 or 4 applicants for some jobs where before there had been none.

The District Governor, Richard Bowen-Thomas, together with his wife Christine, and Assistant District Governor Ken Brookes, together with his wife Margaret, visited the Club today. The DG spoke warmly on the theme of this Rotary Year (Sow the Seeds of Love), quoting the words "Rotary is friendship organised to build more friendship and better friendship". The DG pointed out that the four avenues of service allow us to build a friendly club (Club Service), a friendly workplace (Vocational Service), a friendly community (Community Service), and a friendly world (International Service). This led Richard to speak on the District project, "Youth in Search", saying that he hoped to raise $500 per club to fund this outreach to troubled youth. In concluding, the DG firstly encouraged Club members to seek speakers for meetings who might enjoy the experience, and so seek membership of the Club, and secondly to attend the Rotary International World Convention in Brisbane in June next year.
