Youth Director’s Report 2005/06

It was a great honour to be Youth Director this past year, especially when you consider Sel Hardy was the previous Director for several years.  We organised an Award for Grade 10 at Southport High School, donated money to Arundel Primary School and had attendees at both RYLA and RYTS.

The competition at Southport High School was only for the Grade 10 students.  We found a sponsor for $500.00.  We were then given a short listed group of students, decided by the teachers –the students were to be high achievers in anything apart from sport.   From a short listed group, a panel of Rotarians (John Smith, Mark Kent and Kay Bottomley) chose the finalists.

The Arundel State Primary School was given a sum of money to go towards a teacher forum.  A sponsor for the money was sought and found.  The school has a Chaplain, whom is also funded by a Rotarian of our Club.  The Club approached the Principal, through Mark Kent (incoming President) for the Club assistance, if required.  This project is in the process of being implemented.

RYLA is for 18 year olds and over, we had an attendee from last year go as a trainer for this year’s camp.  But on top of that, Dave Rolle sent two of his apprentices to the camp.  The Club also did a make up and went to camp for a splendid meal on the Tuesday night.   A good night was had by all.  The kids were on a high the whole time they were there.

RYTS is for the 14 year old age group.  The Club sent 2 attendees to the weekend camp where they experienced a similar experience to the RYLA camp only in a less mature form.   Both attendees were extremely appreciative of their chance to enjoy the company of other young people their own age and to learn some basic life skills.

Yours in Rotary

 Mike Bottomley
