The
Project...
The Surfers Sunrise
Wheelchair Trust is dedicated to making sturdy, rough
terrain wheelchairs
from recycled bicycle frames and other materials that
are donated to handicapped children
around the world. The cost of each wheelchair is $100
for materials, as it was 12 years ago
when the project commenced, with all labour donated.
To date over 5,600 have been distributed to over 30
countries.
How it works...
The Surfers Sunrise
members make up kits at the Southport factory which are
then
distributed to Rotary Clubs around Australia who then
construct and paint the wheelchairs
and return them to us for checking and distribution. The
end result is a child experiencing
mobility but the journey along the way is also helping
many other people.
At our factory there are around 20 retirees who help in
the wheelchair manufacture,
stripping bikes, cutting plywood etc and they have found
a new passion in life helping to
assist underprivileged children.
We supply kits to three Work for the Dole schemes and
several schools for their manual
arts curriculum. We also have other volunteers who make
up the wheelchairs
at home in their garages and several men’s sheds in NSW. |
