The 27 May earthquake that affected Central Java measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and left an estimated 6,000 people dead, between 36,000 - 57,000 injured and thousands homeless.
Infrastructures in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas were destroyed and distribution systems disrupted. Priority needs include emergency shelter, food, clean water and sanitation. There is also a shortage of medical facilities, supplies and staff. Rotarians have responded quickly, however more assistance is needed.
District 3400 - Disaster Relief Fund District 3400 has established a disaster relief fund to assist those affected. The first phase of the project will address the immediate emergency situation by focusing on the basic daily needs of survivors and coping with the overflowing hospitals. The second phase will involve restoration of the community infrastructure by rebuilding schools, clinics and libraries and will focus on the needs of the community’s poor.
