Highlight on service: Brazil |
Country overview
The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world, both in area and population. Brazil's official language is Portuguese, and its population is diverse. With a varied geography that includes the world's largest rain forest, the country has an abundance of mineral resources and is a huge agricultural power. Its economic hub lies in the Southeast.
Brazil faces serious ecological and social issues, including poverty, environmental degradation, HIV/AIDS, and crime. Even though the country has a strong economy, it has one of the highest levels of socioeconomic inequality in the world, which poses a challenge in meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals.
Projects seeking assistance
Brazilian Rotary clubs sponsor 264 Rotary Community Corps, which are actively involved in improving their communities. World Community Service and Rotary Volunteers projects in Brazil are addressing a wide range of issues, such as sustainable employment, vocational training, youth care and education, literacy, potable water, and health.
Find out how to support these efforts through the WCS Projects Exchange Database and the Rotary Volunteers International Site Database. |
