SERVICE BY THE CLUB FOR 2006/2007

President Mark Kent reported to the meeting of the Club held on 12 December 2006 that successful fund raising efforts during the first half of the
Rotary year would enable a series of donations to be made during the next six months. Directors reported on assistance to be given to local  community organisations as well as international projects.
At the meeting of the Club held on 5 June 2007 Director Ken Bonython reported that
approximately $3,800 had been raised at the BBQs held at Parklands in conjunction with the 2007 International Boat Show at Sancturary Cove.
The donations made by the Club during the period from 1 January to 30 June 2007 include the following:

Blue Care Internet Home Vocational Service Director Mike Bottomley announced that the Club would provide 2 CADD pumps to Blue Care
Southport Surfers Paradise Blue Nursing Centre at a cost of $5,400. This equipment was urgently required for the treatment of cancer patients.
Sue Burgess, Director of Nursing at the Centre said: "
The incidence of cancer is increasing especially with the ageing population. Thus there is an increasing demand on our services. As we only get part Government funding we rely on the generosity of the community to support us. One of the ways we can assist clients to remain at home is when their pain and symptoms are well controlled. In some cases the medication needs to be given via injection as oral medications are not effective. To reduce the number of injections that are given and to provide a steady amount of drug, we use small portable CADD pumps that the nurses load up a couple of times a week. The medication is given through a small needle that is left inserted just under the skin. This results in the client being kept comfortable and reduces stress on the carer. "
Mike said that the Centre has developed a very high reputation for providing excellent palliative care services and support for cancer
patients in the community.

The Club  met at Blue Care Southport-Surfers Paradise Centre, 88 Muir Street, Labrador on Tuesday 30 January for presentation of the CADD pumps to Blue Care Director of Nursing, Sue Burgess by Mark Kent, President of the Club.

This was followed by the presentation of a Pride of Workmanship Award to Shirley Daly - see report here.

A MESSAGE FROM SUE BURGESS, DIRECTOR OF NURSING
Southport Surfers Paradise Blue Nursing Centre

September 2007

I am pleased to announce that my centre has received extra Government funding which means I have the ability to take on more clients for nursing care and personal care. If you or a member of your family requires nursing or personal care in your home please call our Centre on 55320588 to discuss your eligibility, fee structure etc.

If clients have a chronic ongoing condition they would only be expected to pay a client contribution of $5 per visit. Clients who are financially disadvantaged can have this fee waived. We are also able to refer clients on to other health care services.

We look forward to your call.
