What Paul Harris (and other Rotary Leaders) Said

- May 9, 2005

“War always is a ghastly blunder; even the winners lose.”

Paul P. Harris,

My Road to Rotary

Our Rotary World Peace Scholarship Program is a positive step to overcome the disastrous blunders in this often cruel and bloody world.

A donation of US $500,000 would endow a Rotary World Peace Scholarship, which would provide a scholarship in your name in perpetuity. Individuals, clubs and districts are encouraged to participate in this endowed (named) scholarship program.

The Rotary District xxxx World Peace Scholarship.

In addition donations in the amount of US $25,000 per year or US $50,000 every other year will support a Rotary World Peace Scholar for study at one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies and you  will be recognized as a Rotary Centers Peacebuilder.

Would you or your club or district consider becoming “A Rotary Centers Peacebuilder?”

Fellow Rotarians,

Thank you Eddie, for this week’s quote by Rotary Founder Paul Harris. You can read more about Rotary Global History Fellowship Director Eddie Blender on our website at www.rotaryhistoryfellowship.org/committee/board.htm#Edward.

There is a very interesting peace initiative taking place between Rotarians in Armenia and Rotarians in Turkey. Kaan Soyak, who is Co-Chair of the International Service Division/Conflict Resolution at the Rotary Club of New York, sent me the following message:

Dear Mats,

Pursuant to our conversation last week, would you like to look at our web site www.tabdc.org (Rotary Peace Conference) and our www.nyrotary.org web site where story and pictures of the historical Peace Conference are available? I will be in the Rotary Luncheon tomorrow and would be happy to hear from you.

Yours in Rotary,

Kaan

Kaan also sent the following message to Rotary Global History Fellowship Director Helen Reisler, who is also the Governor Elect for District 7230:

Dear Helen,

I am glad to inform you that The Rotary Club of New York (RCNY) made another
historical move on March 18-20, 2005 in Ankara where more than 400 Rotarians
came together from 5 countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Turkey and
USA). RCNY acted as the Co-Moderator and the Co-Chair of this event.  I
hereby thank Giorgio Balestrieri for his great contribution/help in Ankara and Barney
for his magic hands at the UN.

As you may remember, RCNY was instrumental in obtaining the Charters of the
two Rotary Clubs in Northern Cyprus where Turkish and Greek Rotarians were
able to enjoy the benefits of being Rotarian in the isolated island.
Our next move will be on Iraq where we are at the investigating step of the
future Rotary clubs in Iraq.

You can find the details and the pictures in our web site www.nyrotary.org

Yours in Rotary Service,
Kaan Soyak

This is a very interesting effort to build bridges of peace through Rotary. Thank you Kaan and Giorgio for your efforts!

One of the great things about Rotary is that it offers great opportunities to meet business leaders outside our own profession. I had a very interesting lunch in New Jersey last week with Tom Veevers, who is the Centennial Governor of Rotary District 7640, which includes the Rotary Club of Atlantic City and the historic Rotary Club of Camden.

Tom’s classification is Insurance Recruiting. He told me that when he was President of the Rotary Club of Garden State of Cherry Hill, the membership of his Rotary Club increased from 49 to 78 members. That is a membership increase of 59% in one year. I could see from my conversation with Tom that he is very focused on opportunities to market Rotary. It shows that Rotarians can make a big difference to the growth of Rotary. You can read about the Rotary Club of Camden on our website at www.rotaryhistoryfellowship.org/clubs/cities/clubs/59camden.htm.

The Rotary Club of Chicago celebrated its 100th birthday on February 23rd this year. The following Rotary Clubs’ have recently celebrated their 95th birthdays:

Last weekend, we celebrated Mother’s Day in America. My wife Sundra is the mother of our son Morris, who is graduating from Hunter College High School this year. She recently took the following beautiful picture in a New York City park:

Let these flowers celebrate all Rotarian mothers around the world.

It is the mission of Rotary Global History Fellowship to inform about the historic achievements of Rotary. We must have perspective in order to continue to make Rotary successful in the future. To obtain a good perspective for the future, we must also obtain a good perspective of the past. This is why Rotary History is so important.

Rotary Global History Fellowship is organized in the International Rotary Sprit with members from all over the world. You can become a member by clicking on the link www.joinrghf.org.

When Rotary International President Glenn Estess announced his Presidential theme “Celebrate Rotary,” he said the following:

Our first hundred years will stand as an inspiring record of men and women of all races, religions, nationalities and political creeds who have made significant contributions to creating a more peaceful world.

Rotary International Past President 2000-2001 Frank J. Devlyn said:

Rotary Global History Fellowship is an instrumental tool for those forward-thinking people who wish to learn from our history, in order to guide our future.
