The Sydney Opera House in Australia
is illuminated with an End Polio Now message 23 February 2009. The message
was projected onto a number of iconic landmarks worldwide in honor of
Rotary's 104th anniversary. Photo by Mark Wallace.
Rotary International's campaign to rid the world of polio has
stepped up a gear with the words
"End Polio Now" beamed onto the Sydney Opera House.
The message
coincided with the organisation's 104th birthday on Monday,
with five more displays planned for some of the world's most renowned
landmarks.
"This is to remind people all over the world that Rotary's
major international project,
which has been going for around 25 years, is almost complete, with only four
countries remaining where polio is endemic (including) Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India and Nigeria," a Rotary statement said.
Projections will be made on Table Mountain in Cape Town,
The Coliseum in Rome, The Houses of Parliament in London,
Niagara Falls in the US and the United Nations Building in New York.
