Suggestions for Maintaining a Strong Link with Rotary World Peace Scholar (RWPS)
Alumni
The following
recommendations were made by Rotary World Peace Scholars Carolyn Fanelli and
Amy Kay
to a meeting of representatives of twelve Rotary Clubs of District 9640 on 1 September 2004.
Carolyn and Amy inspired the audience with reports of their field work in
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Ethiopia
respectively and their general enthusiasm for the program of Rotary Centers
for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution:-
First, we acknowledge that RWPS can take personal
responsibility and initiative for maintaining good contact with Rotary
International and Rotary Clubs around the world, and we encourage RWPS to do
so.
In addition, we believe there are some steps both Rotary
International and Rotary Clubs could consider taking that would strengthen
the network created by the ever-growing list of RWPS alumni:
-
Every RWPS alumni could be given a free five-year
subscription to The Rotarian.
-
RI could invite RWPS to Rotary international
Conventions every year, and perhaps offer free admission for the first
five years after graduating as a Peace Scholar. There could be a special
travel fund that alumni from developing countries could apply for to make
their attendance more feasible. In addition, a RWPS alumni meeting could
become part of every Convention.
-
Clubs could announce on their Web site that RWPS are
always welcome at their meetings.
-
At the back of every issue of The Rotarian there
could be update on peace scholar alumni and what they are doing now. For
example, a scholar could write in to share details about his/her new
position or a recent accomplishment.
-
Rotary Clubs could be encouraged to look to RWPS past
and present as a resource in their efforts to fulfil the international
community service part of their mandate. Many RWPS will be living and
working around the world for organizations dedicated to the cause of
peace, and they will likely have good ideas and valuable connections for a
Rotary Club interested in helping people overseas, particularly in areas
where there may not be a significant Rotary presence.
-
Contact information for all RWPS will soon be on the
Web, so Clubs could go online to see if there is a current or former RWPS
in their area who would be able to come and speak to their Club.
-
Finally, a Peace Scholar in Argentina has come up with
the idea of RI collecting essays on peace written by RWPS past and present
and then selling the book – perhaps as a fundraiser.
