“Live Below the Line” campaign, a joint initiative of The Oaktree Foundation and the Global Poverty Project

Dearest Members of the Rotary Club of Parkwood,

I am writing to you as a member of the “Live Below the Line” campaign, a joint initiative of The Oaktree Foundation and the Global Poverty Project. “Live Below the Line” aims empower young people around Australia, and educate them about issues of global poverty. In addition it seeks to raise funds to provide education opportunities for young people overseas as part of Oaktree’s partnership with Kampuchean Action for Primary Education (KAPE).

The Oaktree Foundation is Australia’s first youth-run aid and development organisation; we are young people committed to ending global poverty. We have raised over $1,500,000 dollars for overseas aid and development work and have a volunteer base of over 400 young people across Australia under the age of 26 who regularly engage in our fundraising, education and advocacy efforts.

This year, we are launching a new fundraising initiative which challenges the traditional parameters of fundraising campaigns: Live Below The Line. Live Below The Line challenges individuals, groups and communities across Australia to live on less than US $1.25 a day for a week for all food expenses.  This campaign is a “sponsor-me” style initiative whereby participants will be sponsored to undertake this challenge during the 2nd-8th August by their friends and family. Equally, it is also an empathy raising campaign which seeks to build a meaningful understanding of extreme poverty in the lives of Australians.

Oaktree will be partnering with Kampuchean Action for Primary Education (KAPE). KAPE is an independent Cambodian NGO with over 10 years of experience in basic education improvement and delivery in Cambodia. This initiative marks a new approach to educational development in the basic education sector in Cambodia. The Program has been designed to address quality and governance issues by increasing the accountability of teaching aids whilst ultimately equipping students with the necessary life skills to pursue further vocational training and employment. KAPE will work with three Cambodian schools for 4 years, beginning in January 2011 and ending September 2014. Oaktree is committed to funding the entire project for this period. With your support, we could effectively achieve a significant overall improvement in the standards of teaching and the quality of education in one of the poorest regions on our earth.

As we are a youth non-for-profit organization, we are enquiring about the possibility of receiving sponsorship in the form of financial support from your Rotarian Club. The benefits of sponsoring our campaign are significant. Not only will the Rotary be assisting a great cause, but the target market (18 to 26 year olds) will acknowledge that your club is associated with an ethical project and will view this kindly. Additionally, I have personal link to your club, as the Rotary Club District of 9640 supported me in 2008 when I attended the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra, to which I am eternally grateful.
