MESSAGE FROM JENNY HORTON

Yes I knew Jenni was heading
off we have been corresponding which has been
nice. I know this will change her world. It is an amazing experience
to
be part of this program in the field, but only made possible because of
every member of this incredible team, many of whom fundraise and never see
the work that goes on in the field. That is where these visits are great
as they bring home the message and show many just what their contribution
is
achieving.
We are about ready to start a national campaign here on 22nd Nov so are
extremely busy. The earthquake areas have actually started their
immunization campaigns as most are living in tents and the fear of disease
is great. Oh the north is facing a real problem, the earthquake has
really caused so much devastation and now with the harsh winter conditions
there is a worry about how people will manage. I have not had the
opportunity to go and assist but many of our staff located in the area
have.
Here in Karachi we have received some evacuees as the northern hospitals
are
now also tent cities.
Polio Eradication in Pakistan is looking promising. We are using
monovalent vaccine for the second round this time so targeting the
specific
strain of virus (P1) that is in this country. We are hoping it will give
us the boost we need. Currently (Nov 20) we have 21 cases of polio, for
2004 there were 53, and in 2003 there were 103. But 2 cases of polio
are
considered an epidemic and 1 an outbreak so there is no room for
complacency. This is the countries 57th polio round so you can
understand
why there is some fatigue with the program.
I feel incredibly blessed to be here as a Rotarian working on this....In
just two weeks RIPE Bill Boyd and Lorna are coming to visit which will be
nice. They are great friends. I do miss my friends very much but work
does keep me busy. Bill thank you so much for your support with
sharing my newsletters and keeping me in touch with what is happening
there.
That is what the Rotary network is about.
Take care and again thanks. Jenny
