THE
PRES
I received an email during the week from PHF PP
Surendra Bansal from India regarding the progress of the Polio Plus
Programme which I sent to Brian Knowles. Brian kindly agreed to provide us
with an update of his own which follows: A report on the polio
eradication program globally for the
first 7 months of 2006 - to 1 August 2006. There are still 4 countries
listed as being polio endemic, where the wild polio virus is still active.
They are Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are a number of
other countries reporting polio cases, but in all of these they have
resulted from importation of the virus, and not from an active wild polio
virus in the country itself. There has been a total of 815 cases globally
in the 7 month period - 734 in the 4 endemic countries and 81 in
non-endemic countries. This latter figure has reduced from 604 for the same
period in 2005. Unfortunately, there has been an increase in the cases in
the endemic countries, stressing the urgency to continue with an
accelerated immunisation program. Fortunately it appears that the
Governments of these countries are aware of this. The two countries with
most cases are Nigeria (566) and India (136). In India most of the activity
is in two provinces, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, states where the routine
immunisations were allowed to dwindle some years ago, when it was decided
to focus on other diseases. Regular immunisation days are now being held in
these two states. Closer to home, it is pleasing to note that Indonesia
which suffered from importation of the virus last year has seen a dramatic
improvement. In the 7 months to 1 August there were only 2 reported cases
compared to 189 for the same period in 2005.
Thanks very much for the report Brian.
GOT AN IDEA FOR A
PROJECT?.
I encourage
any members to contact either myself or any of the board members with any
ideas or concepts they have for projects with which our club can become
involved. The board meets the first Monday of the month ( Monday 4th
September) and will look at any reasonable projects, plans or activities
that the Parkwood Rotary Club can help with.
THE NEW MONTHLY ROSTER
system is up
and going. During August, John Smith and Lisa Murdoch will be contacting
members randomly each week requesting their assistance in the running of
the club's weekly meetings. This week it was great to have Maxine as
Sergeant supported ably by Mike Bottomley on collection duty.
Shortly a memo will be emailed around outlining the expectations of each
job you may be called upon to undertake and which Board Member and Rotarian
will be co-ordinating each month.
As a heads up for September and October, the following members have been
rostered on as co-ordinators:
SEPTEMBER:
Karyn
Joyner & Mark Twyford
OCTOBER:
Mike Bottomley &
Margaret Grummit |

THIS WEEK
we had a
visit from Barry Thornton representing the newly formed Parkwood Action
Group. Barry provided members with details about the proposed
redevelopment of the Parkwood International Golf Course. This proposal
includes 45 two storey, 3brm townhouses on the 10th Tee in
addition to a new clubhouse and tennis courts. Margaret Grummitt assisted
with her explanation about the impact on the Flood Plains which form a
major part of the golf course. For those interested you can attend a
public meeting at Abbott Park at 2pm Saturday 19th August 2006.
Barry asked that if as individuals you would like to support the opposition
of this proposal please contact him at
bthornton@priceroobottom.com.au
Great to see Peter Lucas, visiting Rotarian from RC of
St Leonard’s again as he enjoys the coast's winter sun.
David Rolle introduced his father who we later learned
was called John visiting from WA.
.As our Guest Speaker new member Craig Tobler told us
all a little more about his life. He was Born in Southport and grew up in
Labrador where his parents still live today. For those who missed it be
sure to ask Craig about his eduction (the letters after his name must run
off his business card) and the places he worked while he lived in the USA
for nearly 20 years. California and Washington DC to name a couple. Craig
returned to Australia in 2003 as a father of 3 – Courtney 17, Jaydon 11 and
Nathan 10 who all live the USA. He is now the CEO of a sports technology
company called Fusion Sport Pty Limited. We were all entertained when
Craig played a video of the companies products being used by coaches of a
school boys cricket team.
NEXT WEEK
one of
our intrepid travellers returns with another showing of his amazing
photographs and stories. John Tunnicliff will be reporting next week on
his trip to the wilds of Africa.
