THE
PRES
It was great to hear from DG Douglas Geekie this week
and to have the opportunity to be able to see his vision for his upcoming
year for District 9640 and to know the direction the organisation is
heading. From my viewpoint, it was great to see him promoting a younger
membership base as a major emphasis this year. We have all heard it many
times but it is pleasing to know that the District is focussing on this
aspect of Rotary. I know one or two members would like to believe
differently, but we won't be around in 50 years and it is important that the
groundwork is set for the longevity of our club and the organisation. If
you weren't able to be at the meeting check out this week's Gold Coast Sun
for Douglas' ideas on both the immediate and long term future of Rotary.
It's a good article and great coverage for the organisation. Thanks also to
my AG Brian McAllen who accompanied Douglas. He is the man behind the DG
and my first link to the District and has been a wealth of information
leading into this year.
Because we were a little light on numbers I asked my
wife to look after the DG for the evening and she did a great job in
establishing that link between our club and the district on a more
personable level. Thanks Jan.

Jan Kent, DG Doug Geekie and Pres Mark Kent
THE BOARD met with the DG just prior to
the meeting and gave some direction to the club as well. He emphasised:
> The club looking towards 3 year board appointments and the provision for
a President Nominee
> 30% fundraising to go towards International projects
>The establishment of a High School Interact club.
Thanks to those board members who made it and gave their input as well.

THIS WEEK
we heard from most of the board members regarding their individual projects
for the coming year:
Mike Bottomley (Vocational) is organising 2 vocational visits, an
employee award and a business award.
Sel
Hardy (New Generations) Hopes we can participate in RYTS camp (Nov), RYLA
(Feb), High Achievers award Yr, Arundel Primary School (teachers forum and
working bee) and National Youth Science Forum Nominations.
Ken Bonython (Community Service) - Medic Alert, Bowel Scan, Suicide
Prevention, Breakfast at Musgrave Primary School are all on his agenda.
Dave Rolle (Club Service Projects). This could be one of the most exciting
projects our club can be involved in this year. Assisting in the
establishment of a Bravehearts home for abused children at Arundel. Through
the hard work and generous donation of time, material and effort, RIMCO
(David's business) has agreed to assist in setting up the facility and no
doubt the club members will be able to assist at certain stages. More to
come! Thanks David for your generosity and time put into this so far.
NEW EDITOR-URGENT
This could be the last edition of FAIRWAYS if a volunteer
does not come forward very soon to offer their services in compiling the
Club Magazine. Please let me know if you can spare half an hour each week
to get this done. Some computer skills and an imagination is all you need.
NEXT WEEK
we will have a return visit from Kate Braybrook for her GSE Follow Up. Kate
was very entertaining last time so she should be a great guest speaker once
again.
THE UPCOMING EVENTS
CALENDER is at the bottom of the page and is growing every
week! Please have a look
so you don’t have any clashes with what is coming up in August and beyond.
It seems as each day passes we have more events and date claimers so keep
an eye on what is happening by scrolling down. In recent days Brian Knowles
and I have managed to organise a Sunday morning Breakfast at the Sensory
Gardens in Rosser Park on 17 September. It will be an all in family/
friends and relatives affair so please diarise the dater. More to come.

IT
WAS GREAT to see Brian Knowles
in the SAA seat this week. Not only for his fine form and wit but also
because he and Nancy have kindly donated our new Sergeant's red vest to be
worn by all future sergeants at our meetings. He managed to extract a
number of fines from most of the members including
1. DG - article in The Sun
2. Mike B - Lions
3. Doug T - red braces last week - where are the green ones this week?
4. Allan R - taking a trip - pay in advance
5. Alison - her President's trophy
6. Mark T - for drinking at The Grand
7. Pres Mark - for lurking at The Grand
8. Ken B - pinching SAA raffle tickets
9. Doug T - comments on SAA jacket
10. Sel - being at Margarita's at 9am
11. Gary C - looking very elegant
12. John Smith - last in
13. Pres - SAA paid - for poor spelling 'Brain'
14. Sel - going away - pay in advance
As for Heads and Tails and the raffles, we had winners
in the form of visiting ADG Brian McAllan, SAA Brian Knowles and. Alison's
Raffle card was drawn by Ken B but the 2 of clubs didn't do it for him.
Over $1300.00 is up for grabs now. Alan Richards got heads and tails.
(What, no wins by Doug Thomas?)
ATTENDANCE has
always been one of those bugbears. Our new Secretary is putting a lot of
work into maintaining the figures for me. It would be great to keep our
monthly attendance in the 80 percentile (July was 57%) so please let the
Secretary know if you require excused attendance or have done any make ups.
Those who achieved 100% attendance in July Mark Kent, Brian Knowles, John
Smith, Ken Smith, Doug Thomas, Mark Twyford, Susan Tyrrell.
ANNOUNCEMENTS this
week include
