Community Service History

 

1993/4 Jim Fairweather was Director. The first major project selected was planning for the printing and distribution of a Disability Map to assist disabled people in getting access to public buildings, etc. The interest of the Club in this project has been maintained in following years. The Club assisted with the Cancer Fund Door Knock, the Musgrave Special School Dental Project, commencement of a plaque tunnel for the South Coast Region Dental Nurse, Leukemia Foundation Golden Chain and Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

1994/5 Bill Sandford was Director and with Bob Johnston organised the Club's first Race Day which was held on 8 July, 1995. This annual effort has been continued each year and has been a source of finance for many worthy programs.. David Rolle acted as co-ordinator of a project to assist Hopewell Hospice. Ian Balmain introduced Peer Support and enlisted the support of other Clubs for this project The Club has continued to pioneer the development of Peer Support in South East Queensland schools; assisted by a substantial donation from the AMP Society for this purpose.

1995/6 Debbie Whiley commenced the year as Director and then handed this role over to Gary Cummins. Gary was able to complete the plaque tunnel. The Club participated in the Red Shield Appeal, as well as a working bee for Clean Up Australia and made nominations for Shine On awards.

1996/7 David Rolle was hands on Director and Bill Stanford fund raising Director(Race meeting, Melbourne Cup Calcutta Night etc.) A storage shed was constructed for the Coomera Valley Special Education Development Unit. Further progress was made with the mobility map and negotiations commenced for construction of the Parkwood Heights Scouts Hall. A CPR Training night was held at Conrad Jupiters.

1997/8 Ken Alderton was Director and continued to pursue projects such as the mobility map and Red Shield Door Knock. Donations to the Rotary Foundation and the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund were continued. The Club sponsored the formation and charter of the Parkwood Probus Club as well as preliminary steps for the formation of the Griffith University Rotaract Club.

1998/9 Kim Myers served as Director. As the result of a fund raising day in partnership with the Gold Coast Harness Racing Club, a donation of $3,000 was made towards the cost of refurbishing the Children's Ward at the Gold Coast Hospital. A race day held in conjunction with the Gold Coast Turf Club was one of the major fund raising efforts.  Painting of the Parkwood Scouts Hall was undertaken and $1,000 collected in a door-knock for the Queensland Cancer Fund.

1999/2000 David Rolle served as Director. The Parkwood Scout Hall was painted in 'River Gum' green paint. The Club
assisted with the Bowel Scan project by sale of kits at Harbour Town Shopping Centre. A new community service
project, Carols by Candelight, was a huge success and is tribute to the dedication and work by PP Lyn Nelson.
The Club continued its support of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

2000/2001 Sel Hardy served as Director. Activities were as follows:
July: Catering for Swimming Club carnival.
September: Annual Race Day at Gold Coast Turf Club with an attendance 80 for the fund raising effort.
October:  Doorknock for Queensland Cancer Fund raised $1,000.
March: Assistance with Bowel Scan Project.
March: Clean-up Australia Day - several trailer loads of rubbish collected in  the streets of Parkwood and surrounds.
May:  Doorknock for Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal raised $600.

2003/2004 Sally Neumann commenced the year as Director and on her resignation David Rolle completed the year in this capacity. During the year the Club assisted with tree planting at Arundel Park; the annual Queensland Cancer Fund doorknock and participated in the Relay for Life. David enlisted several members to help him with construction of the Coomera Water Sports Club House; especially labour donated by Brett Shearer for laying of concrete. The Club was pleased to sponsor the formation of the Griffith University Rotaract Club. Assistance was given to the Walk for Life under the sponsorship of Ron Clark, currently Mayor of the Gold Coast.
