The Rotary Club of Parkwood
COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT 2005/06
During this Rotary Year through Community Service we have been able to achieve our stated objectives (few as they were) so special thanks should be proffered to those Members who participated in various projects. These mainly revolved around our fund raising BBQ’s held most times, on a regular basis. Throughout the Calendar year of 2005 BBQ’s were conducted at the Domayne out front of Harvey Norman’s in conjunction with the Ashmore Club (almost once a month) with limited results. We participated in the Gold Coast City Council’s Healthy and Active Fun Days providing food at:
Abbot Park: No one seemed to know it was on. Driftwood Park: A much more satisfying event. Evandale Park: An excellent day providing much needed funds. Evandale Park: Rain started at 11.30am continuing non-stop until washing us out and this, on the Commonwealth Games Celebration’s Day. The end of January saw us out in front of Bunning’s, Harbourtown resulting in a wonderful return for our efforts. At the end of February we were back there enabling us to celebrate an ever greater success. In March we tried our luck at the new Westfield Shopping Centre but unfortunately the spot we were allocated provided little or no passing traffic leaving us no option but to do some sprucing outside the main entrance hence the day was not a total disaster. A complete turn around of fortune for our latest venture in providing the BBQ at the showgrounds where those attending the Boat Show at Sanctuary Cove caught their buses. The results over the Saturday and Sunday were nothing short of exhilarating. We badly needed this revival of spirit as we look for new venues with greater potential for the coming Rotary year. One Sunday morning in October we arranged through the Gold Coast City Council to plant trees at Driftwood Park. Our attendance was admirable but it was unfortunate the Coordinator was unaware we were coming and did not have enough trees on hand enabling most Rotarians to return home to their normal Sunday chores. For a donation of $297.00 we were able to present a Suicide Prevention Kit of a DVD and associated literature to the Musgrave Hill Primary School Head Master at a recent Rotary dinner. A further donation of $125.00 was made to Medic Alert in recognition of their excellent work in providing bracelets giving Ambulance Officers and the like access to vital information about the patients medical history without delay. Our Club was represented during the Bowel Scan Week with public presentations in conjunction with the Upper Coomera Club and more recently helping the Salvation Army during their Red Shield Appeal. Currently we are preparing to launch a breakfast program for under privileged children, attending Musgrave Hill Primary School, who for whatever reason have to arrive at school on an empty stomach. These were probably the main events for this Rotary year and once again our special thanks go to those Rotarians (usually the same Members) who continually volunteer their time for these events.
