Southport State High School - Aitken Welding Bursary

President John and President Elect, Mark Kent, attended at the Southport State High School on the 16th November to make the award of a bursary to Grade 10 students of the school. A $500 bursary was made available by our youth services director Mike Bottomley through his company Aitken Welding.

Mike intends the bursary to assist students and their parents to defray the costs of entering grade 11. The selection criteria was on academic and cultural achievement/potential rather than sport. An initial selection process by staff at the school produced 3 worthy candidates, Kristen van Saldern, Monique Holland and Antonia Zappia. The girls were interviewed by Kay Bottomley, Mark Kent and John Smith. Kristen was chosen as the winner.

The presentation was made before a full assembly of the school and the winner and runners up were given rousing applause from their peers. The three successful candidates were most appreciative of the bursary. In due course we will invite Kristen and her parents to attend one of our weekly
meetings so that they can meet with the members of our club and Kristen can give a short talk about herself and her ambitions."
